The 39 Steps

Our staged adaptation of The 39 Steps reimagines Patrick Barlow’s riotous thriller within the world of a 1930s film studio, where cinema, theatre, and imagination collide. Set against the backdrop of flickering lights, rolling cameras, and hurried scene changes, the production embraces meta‑theatre, inviting the audience to watch both the story and the storytelling unfold simultaneously.

Blending physical theatre, ensemble work, and heightened theatricality, this production transforms the famous espionage tale into a playful exploration of performance itself. A large ensemble fluidly shifts roles, locations, and realities, revealing the mechanics of theatre while celebrating its capacity for invention. Scenes fracture and reform like film reels, with actors becoming technicians, characters, and storytellers in full view of the audience.

Rooted in the style and glamour of early cinema, the production pays homage to Hitchcock’s original while amplifying its inherent theatrical absurdity. The result is a fast‑paced, imaginative retelling that revels in transformation, movement, and collaboration, where the line between stage and screen dissolves, and the joy of live performance takes centre stage.

This production is being performed by Year 9, 10 & 12 students of Clifton College
