After breaking his parole to make a new life for himself, Valjean, inspired to turn his life around by a kind Bishop, is pursued by police inspector Javert. Valjean always keeps on the move; adopting the recently orphaned Cosette along the way, whom he rescues from the unscrupulous Thénardiers. He even joins a group of young idealists on the barricade in their ill-fated rebellion against the monarchy.
